Automotive - 2010 Toyota 4Runner Takes on the Baja 1000

Automotive - 2010 Toyota 4Runner Takes on the Baja 1000
The Background
Akio Nishimura is a real off-roader: He enjoys shedding his corporate navy blue suit and getting out in the dirt. This made him an ideal chief engineer to develop and launch the 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser, and a natural to step up to engineering the new 2010 Toyota 4Runner.

In August 2009, in an effort to uncover any potential weak spots in the new 4Runner, CE Nishimura and a team of engineers from the Toyota Arizona Proving Ground (TAPG) took two prototype "Trail" edition 4Runners to run the Rubicon Trail in northern California.

After three days on the trail, they came out with nothing to report: no problems, no drama, nothing broken, just a few desert racing stripes. Before the TAPG team drove back to the Phoenix test track in the dusty 4Runners, Nishimura said he was "disappointed." They hadn't found any opportunities for kaizen (improvement) of his design, and he was still looking for a more extreme durability test.

Nishimura had heard a story about Joe Bacal, a cancer survivor and former TAPG test driver who entered a Lexus LX 570 in the Baja 500 in July 2009 and won his class. This may have been the first-ever Lexus entry in international off-road racing and was certainly the world's first victory for a Lexus in off-road racing.

Putting this together with his experiences in working with desert racer Rod Millen during the launch of the FJ Cruiser, Nishimura determined to put the prototype 4Runner to a similar test and began planning for a "high-speed accelerated durability test" in November in Mexico -- he wanted to enter the 42nd Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, the famous race across the peninsula of Baja California, Mexico, in which barely half the starters are running at the finish. And to clear up the numbers, the Baja 500 race course is designed to be close to 500 miles in length, whereas the Baja 1000 is 1000 kilometers (621 miles), except in the first year of each decade, when it really is 1000 miles. The Baja 1000 race course for the 42nd running in November 2009 was based on the July 2009 Baja 500 course, but with a big loop added around San Felipe and a short extension down to Mike's Sky Ranch, for a total distance of 1082.85 kilometers (672.85 miles).

Automotive - Not Over Yet: Federal Investigation Turns to Toyota's Electronics

The U.S. Department of Transportation is including Toyota electronics as a possible conduit in its investigation of unintended acceleration, Automotive News reports. The news Web site cites an unidentified Transportation official who confirmed the inclusion of possible electronic problems via email.

Thus far, Toyota has suspended production and sales of key models in its lineup while it rushes to revise its pedal assemblies. The world's largest automaker has also issued recalls affecting some 7.5 million vehicles worldwide (Click here for our timeline).

"We're not finished with Toyota and are continuing to review possible defects and monitor the implementation of the recalls," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in an unrelated statement today, chastising the automaker for what he feels was a reluctance to initiate a recall.

Toyota issued a response on its media site today, saying, "Since these issues first came to our attention, we have understood that the soonest possible action would be in the best interests of our customers and have acted accordingly. We are very grateful for the advice of all the government agencies involved and feel that through our handling of the recall we have a chance to regain the trust of our customers."

Automotive - For car buyers, lending market sees signs of thaw

Automotive - For car buyers, lending market sees signs of thaw
For car buyers, four words mean the difference between going home in a new sedan or their old clunker: Your loan is approved.

They are being uttered more often these days, spurred by a trillion-dollar government program that provides guarantees when those loans are sold to investors. That is helping banks, credit unions and auto finance companies make auto loans at a quickening pace. And consumers are paying less to borrow. Interest rates have been at record lows since last December.

It's bit of good news for the auto industry in the U.S., where 2009 sales are expected to hit a 30-year low of around 10 million when figures are announced Tuesday. Partly because of loosening credit, industry analysts expect more than 1 million cars and light trucks to be sold in December, the best monthly performance since Cash for Clunkers in August.

Financial firms wrote 5.5 percent more car loans in the third quarter compared with the prior three months, Experian Automotive says. Fourth-quarter figures aren't yet available, but Jesse Toprak, vice president of the auto pricing tracker TrueCar Inc., says December saw an uptick in auto loan approvals for consumers with average or above-average credit as auto finance companies tried to clear out inventory.

Paul Taylor, chief economist for the National Auto Dealers Association, said used-car prices also have stabilized due to limited supply, making used-car loans more attractive to banks.

Still, Toprak said it could take another year or even longer for financial firms to trust consumers enough to return to normal levels for auto lending. It's also far from the freewheeling days of the credit boom. Third-quarter auto lending was down 30 percent from the same period in 2006, a year when U.S. car and light truck sales reached 16.5 million.

In the meantime, only those with good credit need apply.

A top-tier borrower - someone with a credit score between 720 and 850 - can get a 36-month auto loan with an average monthly rate of 5.74 percent, down from 6.65 percent a year ago, according to Informa Research Services, a financial research firm headquartered in Calabasas, Calif. On a $20,000 car loan, that's a savings of nearly $300 over three years.

But the cost of borrowing has risen for people in the bottom tier. A person with a score of 500 to 589 has seen the average rate climb to 18.56 percent from 16.47 percent a year ago. That translates to an extra $751.68 over 3 years. Banks are still nervous about loaning money to risky borrowers given high rates of unemployment, foreclosures and late payments since the financial crisis began.

"We used to have a subprime auto lending industry," says Dan Alpert, managing partner at Westwood Capital, an investment bank involved in the securitization business. "We don't have that anymore."

Although demand for autos has picked up from depths seen at the start of 2009, the lending machine really got moving thanks in large part to grease from the government's TALF - or Term Asset Backed Loan Facility - program. The program began last March and allows investors to borrow money from the Federal Reserve to buy the loans off lenders' books. This raises money and makes room for financial firms to write more loans.

There is evidence it's working. Financial institutions raised more than $19 billion by selling securities made of bundled auto loans in the third quarter last year. That's up nearly 60 percent from the second quarter and more than sixfold from the same period in 2008, according to the Securities Industry & Financial Markets Association.

TALF is scheduled to end in March 2010. Whether the market for securitized loans can stand on its own at that point depends on the state of the economy, lending experts say.

The concerns are similar to those in the housing market, where tax credits for first-time home buyers have helped prop up demand. But those credits expire April 30. And loan activity, in general, has been weak. According to the Federal Reserve, loans by the nation's 8,000 banks have fallen 8 percent to $6.7 trillion in the past year, and some analysts expect them to keep falling at least through next year.

But there are good signs. The proportion of loans - auto and other - requiring TALF support has declined steadily over the past several months and should continue to fall early this year as the market for securitized loans continues to improve, says Tom Deutsch, deputy executive director of the American Securitization Forum, an industry group that represents those who turn debt into bonds.

"It should be relatively easy to wean off TALF," he says.

In the meantime, the easier lending market has helped car buyers like Marissa Corbitt, who last month bought her first-ever car with a loan from Nissan's financing arm, NMAC.

Corbitt, a 24-year-old accountant from Chattanooga, Tenn., was able to negotiate the cost of her 2010 Rogue down several thousand dollars to about $20,500 after some incentives. She said she was then pleasantly surprised by the interest rate NMAC offered her for the crossover.

"Nissan was offering a 2.9 percent APR, so I got that," said Corbitt, whose top-tier credit score helped her case. "It's a good interest rate."

George Pipas, Ford Motor Co.'s top U.S. sales analyst, says the industry appears to have passed through its lowest point and is trending toward a slow recovery.

"The situation is still fragile," Pipas said. "You can't walk away from concerns about employment and income."

The 1957 Chevy Convertible

There was magic in the air in 1957 for Chevrolet. Or was there? Ask anyone who has ever driven a car, to pick a year that they associate with the word Chevy and odds are that they will say 57 and to be more precise the 57 Chevy Convertible.

57 Convertibles Get More Love Today
But the concept and design for the 57 Convertibles was actually born a few years earlier, and the birth was neither perfect nor was it greeted by the public with any real pomp or circumstance.

General Motors and more specifically Harley Earl (their design guru) came under huge pressure in the previous years. They were actually producing great cars by any standards, but their customers were now expecting performance standards way above those required by the roads their cars would be driven on.

Chevy Produced Style, and Speed for 1957
The Chevy Convertible was now expected to compete with its European cousins, namely Alfa, MG and Mercedes amongst others. The American market wanted design, style and speed. Poor sales pre 1957 proved that they were not willing to compromise.

Chevrolet was willing to compromise and quickly recognised that something needed to be pulled out of the proverbial hat. After a brief period of indecision, they were back in fighting form and the hat produced the v8 engine.

The 57 Chevy resembled the 56 in appearance, but with its new V8 specifically modified and tailored, it was ready to take on its American and European Goliath counterparts. For Chevy it was now game set and match. Who was to know at the time that 1957 was to be the year that went such a long way to immortalise what is now the most recognised car on the planet?

2002 Chevy Ad Featuring the 57 Chevy Convertible
45 years later, in 2002, Chevrolet ran an ad campaign featuring a 57 Chevy Convertible. The ad showed the history of the Chevy as "seen" through the ears of pop music with classics like Don MacLean's immortal American Pie. Everybody knows that Don drove his Chevy to the levee. They may not know why, and they may not even know who Don was, but they know exactly what car he drove to the levee. When Prince sang about his "Little Red Corvette", it is alleged that he was referring to his own 57 Chevy Convertible.
But an all time favorite was when Chevrolet themselves ran a classic billboard advertising campaign. Billboards all over the country poignantly reminded people that 'they don't write songs about Volvos' How True.

Yes indeed there was magic in the air in 1957 for Chevrolet with a V8 and fuel injection for real power!

Motorsports history began in 1957 thanks to Chevrolet, and you can find information on other models, like the 57 Corvette, and even more at http://www.1957chevyforsale.com

Pontiac Cars Was GM Muscle?

Pontiac Cars sales peaked in 1973, at 920,000 units. Firebird provided the brand's "excitement" throughout the 1970s, starring in the Burt Reynolds film "Smoky and the Bandit," and prompting consumers across the country to make a run for black-and-gold Trans-Ams.

1982 unveiled the Fiero, a high-tech, mid-engined race design that was approved over bitter protests from Corvette executives worried about their "sports car" position.

The Fiero's innovative space-frame chassis used plastic bodywork and clip on body panels. The factory was called a show place of new production methods. Regular tours were always fully booked.

Pontiac lasted just one year longer than Oldsmobile's 20th century long run. Similar in so many respects, Oldsmobile never had the emotional connection with enthusiasts that Pontiac did. The Chief had 278,000 sales its last year and was purchased by the youngest average age of any GM brand.

Pontiac's identity as a performance brand dates back to the late 1950s and early 1960s. The cars were designed with wider bodies and the wheels pushed out to match. "Wide-track" design became a selling point, advertised as giving Pontiacs a distinct cornering advantage over other cars.

But the public acceptance of Pontiac as a performance brand was solidified in 1964 with the creation of the Pontiac Tempest LeMans Gran Turismo Omologato. Quickly shortened, the GTO is often credited with creating a new class of American car, the Muscle Car.

Pontiac was originally a low-cost alternative in GM's brand hierarchy, and a middle-class mainstay. However, Pontiac's "muscle cars" of the '60s and '70s include some of our finest American classics. There was nothing more powerfully refined, on the streets, than the GTO.

The 1970s were cataclysmic for American automakers as oil cartels formed, raised gasoline prices and sent the consuming public flooding Japan and other Asian countries for smaller, cheaper more fuel efficient autos. Any plan of returning Pontiac to the thundering horsepower of the '70s ended as gas prices continued always upward and Congress' every stricter fuel economy rules.

The golden age of muscle cars was over as GM shifted focus to an array of econo-cars which all failed to connect with consumers. Well, if you're going to put someone in a beer can for 30k, the car should have an interesting design at least. Pontiac's Swan Song earned the distinction of being ranked one of the ugliest designs ever with the pyramidal angled Aztek crossover vehicle.

So, now another farewell, to another true American original. Will Ford be the last American car company standing?

Ferrari and the Hybrid?

Ferrari and hybrid do not seem to fit in the same sentence together, let alone under the same hood. Well, hold your horses, as they are rumored to be prancing in the direction of their first hybrid.

The exotic rumor-mill has been circulating reports that Maranello is preparing a hybrid system for the Ferrari, set for release around 2015. This news comes on the heels of the Geneva Motor Show in March, where it was relayed by Ferrari president Luca Cordero di Montezemolo that prototypes were indeed being tested of a hybrid powertrain in a 2009 Ferrari 599 adapted to the new drive system.

If we assess the rumors a bit deeper, it is far less surprising because the overall trend of the automotive industry collectively seems to be sprouting greener intentions. An increasing number of auto manufacturers from all sectors are adopting and even developing more environmentally sound components and hybrids. It seems the future of the automotive industry sustains an underlying understanding that there is a pronounced need to decrease oil dependency and reduce negative effects on the earth, and with incentives factored in, well, you do the math.

Ferrari has previously announced its plans to reduce carbon emissions by a full 40 percent by 2010, quite an aggressive goal for such a deadline. And this season, Ferrari's Formula One team is recovering wasted energy via regenerative braking for the brand, as well as Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS), in compliance with new guidelines and rules for Formula One racing. It appears even the world's most prestigious racing circuit has a bleeding heart for the environment.

To add to the growing excitement about the Ferrari hybrid rumors, drawings have been leaked from a patent application reportedly, providing an overview of the potential green Ferrari. This leaves one to wonder if the signature red paint job just may be green this time around?

The drawings portray a few variants of four-wheel drive and hybrid technology. One features one set of wheels, likely the rear, powered by the engine through the transmission. Another drawing shows a set of wheels, likely the front, powered by an electric motor or set of in-wheel motors. There are drawings with both front and mid-engine mountings.

It will be interesting to observe as the future of Ferrari, Ferrari rentals, Ferrari Formula One units and more plays out over time. For more on Ferrari, check out our official Ferrari Week blogset.

Los Angeles Auto Show 2009 Concept Cars

The Los Angeles Auto Show 2009 is featuring 11 concept cars which either have a space age design, a green theme or both. Concept cars from Audi, BMW, Honda, Lexus, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo offer a glimpse at what the vehicles of tomorrow may look like.

This group of concept cars include:
• Audi e-tron
• BMW Vision EfficientDynamics
• Honda Personal-Neo Urban Transport
• Lexus LF-Ch Premium Compact Hybrid
• BMW MINI Coupe
• BMW MINI Roadster
• Mitsubishi PX-MiEV
• Subaru Hybrid Tourer
• Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid
• Volkswagen Up! Lite
• Volvo S60 Concept

In regard to space age design, the Audi e-tron, BMW Vision EfficientDynamics and Honda Personal-Neo Urban Transport blow away their respective competition. And of this group, the Honda Personal-Neo Urban Transport (or P-NUT as they are calling it) has the most futuristic design.

The P-NUT is a small urban vehicle meant to tool around big cities and fit into tight spaces. It has a small internal combustion engine coupled with a hybrid battery pack that makes it a green vehicle.

On the P-NUT, the windshield and sunroof merge into one as the swoop of the overhead design lends itself to this feature. Now, let's face it, next to the space age vehicle, the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) isn't very sexy.

It looks basically like a Prius. But what is sexy is that unlike many other concept vehicles, this one is expected to make it to market next year. Not only that, the Prius PHEV will compete head-on with the GM Volt PHEV.

While GM is making grandiose claims about the performance of the Volt (which is still a work in progress) setting up extreme expectations, Toyota is downplaying expectations of the Prius PHEV - for now.

One can look forward to next year and the years beyond and see the Toyota concept car of today, being one of the highest selling vehicles in tomorrow's marketplace. And, that's a pretty good concept, now isn't it?

Car Audio- From your Computer to your Car

Music has never been as easy to access as it is right now, even for your car audio system. With songs readily available from sites such as Amazon and iTunes, you can download music quickly and easily and listen to it right there on your computer. How to get that music into your car can be a little more complicated, though. Previously, you would have had to burn a CD, but now you can play computer music files directly on your car stereo.

These music files come in many formats, though, and transferring them to your car cannot yet be done by email (although that is no doubt only a few years away). So it is not always easy to tell which way is best to get your favourite music from your PC to your car.

There are now three main audio file types on a computer that will transfer to your car audio system: mp3, wma and aac. The mp3 is probably the one most people have heard of and it is the file type that is most common online. However, there are also wma files, which have similar properties but were created especially to be compatible with Windows Media Player. AAC files, on the other hand, are the files which are now downloadable from iTunes, aac stands for advanced audio coding and these files do give higher music quality.

Although they are similar to the user, this difference in file format can affect you. The stereo you have in your vehicle might well not be able to play aac files, or even wma. If your car contains a Panasonic CX-DH801N, for example, you would need to convert any wma files to mp3 before it would be able to play them. On the other hand, stereo systems such as the JVC KD-R303 are compatible with both wma and mp3 file types but not aac. It is best to check carefully what files your audio system will play.

Most car stereos these days are mp3 compatible, but fewer can play wma files without conversion and aac compatible stereos are in the minority. Therefore, if you're not sure whether your car audio equipment is wma or aac compatible, it might be best just to convert all audio files to mp3 to avoid problems. Software to convert music files can be found online, but as with all downloads, be careful about what you're downloading.

Most sites and shops that sell car audio equipment give a run-down of the file types that every stereo supports. If you want to find out more about car stereos, with a clear description of what files they will and will not play, have a look at www.caraudiowarehouse.co.uk.

The New 4 X 4 from Skoda Yeti

The 'compact' 4 x 4 market is already a tough place for car manufacturers to compete. The Honda CR-V, Ford Kuga and Toyota Rav 4 have all successfully blended rugged 4x4 driving with the looks and driving experience that modern drivers want.

But the Skoda Yeti isn't overshadowed by it's more established competition. Starting at just £13,750 (GBP) for the entry level 1.2. petrol turbocharged model, the Yeti is significantly cheaper than it's rivals. The 1.2 petrol and 1.8 petrol versions offer a smooth and refined drive... something that Skoda were no doubt keen to get right targeting this fickle market.

In it's diesel format the top-spec Skoda Yeti is 4WD 2.0 TDI which comes with a whopping 170BHP, for this performance you'll be looking to pay at least £21,500. However the cheaper 110 BHP engine offers an elegant drive and actually feels smoother than the 140BHP engine.

The Skoda cleverly engages it's 4 wheel drive system automatically when the car senses that condition warrant the extra traction and manouevrability of a 4x4. In early tests this automatic switching worked effortlessly and provided a safe and comfortable drive in all conditions.

The Yeti really scores some major points over it's rivals with a wide variety of options designed to increase the flexibility and functionality of the vehicle. The 3 rear seats fold down to increase luggage space or can be removed completely to free up room for long journeys and driving holidays.

For those that like the look of the car and it's performance but don't need the additional performance of a 4x4 there is also an option for 2 wheel drive. The 2 wheel drive versions also offer better fuel economy than their 4wd counterpart.

For those that need more room than a standard estate but don't want to opt for a 4 x 4, a longstanding favourite of UK road users is the Nissan Qashai which effortlessly blends estate driving with a raised driver profile to increase visibility for drivers. The Qashqai also offers greater fuel economy and performance than a Yeti or any of the other 4x4's listed.

The Lexus LS 600h

Under the Lexus flagship, Lexus LS 600h has proven to be a huge success among consumers on a global scale. This eco friendly hybrid sedan is an initiator into the world of "go green". This is a very positive step by Lexus to spread awareness among people.

By adopting an eco-friendly attitude, good changes can take place, and this is a reason why Lexus LS 600h is so popular. Celebrities worldwide are promoting this hybrid model among their avid fans, and regular consumers alike by arriving at red-carpets, and functions seated in the luxurious car.

Lexus on its own is a popular consumer brand, and it has courted trust of the consumers for a long time. This new model has been revamped to fit the contemporary ideals of a modern car. Many technological and stylistic improvements have been made to this model for consumers to benefit from.

The ECO mode, introduced in this model helps it to be a more fuel-efficient car. Reduced load on the engine under acceleration also contributes to making the car more fuel-efficient than the previous models and many other cars under various banners on the market now.

The LS 600h model is all the more popular, because of its exterior design. The new four-bar grille with a redesigned bumper has given the car a status of its own. Another great thing about this model is its availability in many different shades. Consumers can select whatever colour they think suits their needs best. The range of exterior colours has been increased, with Mesa Red, Vanilla Mist, Richmond Green, and Atlantic Blue newly available, together with the hybrid-exclusive Crystal Sapphire.

The interior of the car has undergone rigorous design modifications, as well. Front seats are equipped with latest inflator operated active headrests. It forms an essential component of the mechanism to reduce whiplash injury in case of an accident.

The improved LS 600h feature a new, automatic high beam system. The rear view mirror sports a camera sensor. This camera sensor in the rear view mirror detects oncoming traffic, street lamps, and vehicles travelling ahead, automatically switches the headlamp high beam on, and off according to driving conditions.

Safety wise, this model is a notch above the rest. The larger, 380mm ventilated front-disc brakes with six-piston callipers, rotors, and pads make them ideal for high-speed fade-free stopping power, and give a quieter performance with less vibration as compared to other models.

The Lexus Hybrid Drive system is a great innovation. It has been specifically introduced to meet with the Euro V exhaust emissions standards. A great thing about it is that it does not affect the performance of the car.

The Lexus LS 600h model is a great achievement by the Lexus flagship. The critics are not too happy with the exterior appearance, stating that a little more work and creativity should have been put in to revamp the model according to latest technology. However, overall Lexus LS 600h has garnered a lot of positive media, and consumer attention at international events.

The Ferrari F430 Spider

What was intended to be a unique revision of the 1999 360 Modena, the Ferrari F430 Spider ended up being a stand alone art form. Another spotless dream child of Pininfarina's, The F430 Spider is a sleek, top of the line in a top of the class, registering one of the best reviewed new cars in the V-8 class of sports cars.
Her sleek yet muscular body frame is more than just teasing to the eyes, it was specifically designed using state of the art, knock your socks off, computer assisted imaging programs that are exclusively used by the F-1 team. Not a single detail of performance handling or speed inclination was overlooked, and the results stand high above the rest.

Starting out with what were supposed to be subtle adjustments in refining what was already considered a refined piece of machinery, the subtle was lost as the F430 took on a personality all her own. Her new high finish stainless tailpipes stare down at the competition as her 483 horses and 343 pounds per foot of torque leave her competition staring at her hindquarters.

What seems like a small 20% increase in the Modena's original 3.6 liters of cubic capacity coupled with the larger displacement rumbling V-8 and the new and improved 4 valve cylinder heads adds up to an additional 91 horses and 67 pounds per foot of torque. For the mathematically challenged like myself that all adds up to a roaring 0-60 in just under 4 seconds and an enhanced top speed of 193 miles per hours. Quite a step 20% can provide.

The Ferrari F430 Spider was ceremoniously unveiled to enthusiasts and critics alike at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, under a cacophony of flash bulbs and of course a sense of breathlessness that matched an undescribed anticipation to get her out on the open highway.

The F430 Spider came with a new and improved wind deflection system, a little reworking provided a functionally revised convertible top, and of course the updated and more-than-ready-to-show-you-what-it's-all-about instrument binnacle shone like a beacon from inside the vehicle. Tiny details created an obvious statement about the newest member of the Pininfarina family, right down to the embossed driver's side view mirror shell telling curious onlookers that of course this is an original F430.

With a sleeker central tunnel and electronic differentials that screamed of creative innovation, everything from the basic lines and eye pleasing corners of the car to the traction and handling improvement aimed for all types of roadway conditions oozed out over the Ferrari F430 Spider's sudden explosion onto the car scene.
Of course, onlookers marveled at the steering wheel mounted well thought out innovative design of the commutator switch allows for quick and easy set up of the car's adjustment features. The body shape underwent extensive testing to produce an all out hard to improve upon design that includes such features as a pronounced molder that is handsomely integrated in the engine cover, which is delicately covered in glass, giving it the appearance of a casing just for the heart of the beast. The larger rear intakes pronounce the vehicle's muscular heart, belying its graceful pose. The rear valance cleverly incorporates a diffuser of high class, state of the art competitive nature. Derived from the best in racing, the 430 Spider is a conglomerate of high tech features that smooth into one easy to handle high test version of Pininfarina's time tested performance cars. Unlike innumerable replacement models and redesign hot shots, the F430 Spider comes to the floor without redundancy.

At 177.6 inches in length and 75.7 inches wide, the F350 spider came with more punch for its size than all of her predecessors. The spoiler that gracefully meets both intakes handsomely and effectively drives the F430 toward the ground as she picks up speed, proving that functionality doesn't have to state anything other than beautiful. The intakes themselves are naturally a continuation of the 1961 dream run in the F-1 Championship. Inspired by tradition yet reflecting a modern era of intensity, the effectiveness of these intense designs is a bit overwhelming in their strength and subtlety.

Just like every generation of Ferrari super creations, the F430 Spider has had every detail of performance, style and function considered, perfected, and reconsidered to produce what only the Ferrari name could produce. This $200,000 dream machine is untouchable by most standards but carries her grace just like the rest of the Ferrari family. Critics recently condemned Ferrari for their classical approach to innovative design, encouraging them to step outside the box. What these critics don't realize is that the classical approach to innovative design is exactly what creates the Ferrari family, and to deviate from it would be blasphemous to the Ferrari principles.

The F430's grace on the eyes translates equally to grace on the road way. With the sleeker and more aerodynamic suspension, the finely tuned body design, and the attention to every possible functional detail, the F340 glides over the roadway with an ease that is reminiscent to gliding on cloud fringed skylines. A driver can feel his own pulse throb through his chest as he cranks her over for the first time, the pulsing of the engine practically begs for attention. Her desire for heat flash speed can outweigh the driver's, and in fact can intimidate those who have never felt the power of high class F-1 rumbles underneath their fingertips.

As is true to the Ferrari legacy and good name, with each new unveiling, there will be cars ahead of the F340 that will create an equal stir. But the F340 will fight to be unforgotten, and in fact will readily turn herself into one of those legendary classics that screamed onto the high performance car scene and refused to stop screaming ever since. She will be a perpetual delight and take her rightful place among the queens of the speedway, her pulsating thrum will echo for generations to lust after, learn from, and envy along the way.

Detroit Auto Show: BMW's Roadster Gets Higher-Performance Model for 2011

Range-topping Z4 sDrive35is model makes world premiere at NAIAS.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - December 12, 2009, 6pm EST... Combining classic proportions with modern features, the BMW Z4 Roadster enjoys the top spot in its market segment. Now, the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is distills the Roadster's performance potential to produce one of BMW's fastest and best-handling Roadsters ever. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is is making its world debut as a 2011 model at the 2010 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. It arrives at authorized BMW Centers in Spring 2010.

More air, boost, and torque: More BMW performance.

The latest Z4 model is characterized by instantaneous response to the accelerator pedal, fantastic sounds, and a free-revving spirit. The engine features increased air intake flow and increased boost pressure to release more power with the same standard of efficiency. The combination of twin low-mass turbochargers and High Precision direct injection offers an output a naturally-aspirated engine would only be able to provide through more cylinders and larger displacement.

The turbocharger system developed for the engine of the new BMW Z4 sDrive35is maintains a high output throughout the entire engine speed range. Nominal peak torque is increased to 332 lb-ft from 1,500 rpm to 4,500 rpm. Maximum output of 335 hp is delivered at 5,900 rpm.

Overboost function for athletic acceleration.

The enhanced engine management system of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is includes an electronically-controlled overboost function to briefly increase torque under full load by another 37 lb-ft. This temporary torque peak of 369 lb-ft gives the car a significant increase in acceleration. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is will complete the sprint from a standstill to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds (preliminary). Top speed of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is is limited electronically to 250 km/h or 155 mph.

High Precision direct injection and BMW EfficientDynamics.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35is offers outstanding power and performance without an increase in fuel consumption or emissions. Its figures are expected to match those of the BMW Z4 sDrive35i with Double-Clutch Transmission on the EPA test cycle. This balance of performance and fuel efficiency results from the fundamental design and layout of the BMW inline-6, which combines twin turbochargers with High Precision direct injection. The fuel injectors operate at a pressure of up to 200 bar (2900 psi), distributing fuel in a conical spray pattern throughout the combustion chamber. Another advantage of direct fuel injection is its cooling effect which allows higher compression while reducing the possibility of detonation.

Further technologies offered under the BMW EfficientDynamics philosophy include Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering, and on-demand operation of engine accessory units.
Signature engine sound to accompany the surge of power.

The exhaust system of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is has been tuned specifically for this model. Acoustic engineering gives the car a very unique sound pattern across the speed range. This tuned sound is the result of special baffles and a unique set of mufflers. The sound is characterized by a deep rumble with a focus on the low frequency sound range.

Enhanced Electric Power Steering.

Electric Power Steering (EPS) on the BMW Z4 sDrive35is features very sporty programming, focused to provide intense and clear steering feedback to the driver. This enables the driver to turn-in with remarkable precision and confidence at all vehicle speeds.

7-speed Double-Clutch Transmission with special programming.
The standard 7-speed Double-Clutch Transmission (DCT) in the BMW Z4 sDrive35is combines the best in driving dynamics and efficiency. A highlight is the dual-mass flywheel, configured for the higher levels of power and performance. The DCT can shift gears without the slightest interruption of power to the rear tires, and offers a choice of automatic or manual gear selection. The programming of the DCT has been tailored to complement the sporty nature of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is at every level.

When shifting gears manually or within the SPORT and SPORT+ modes of the Z4's standard Driving Dynamics Control, the transmission offers an exciting experience through faster gearshifts and a greater increase in torque before shifting. The DCT also features a Launch Control function for maximum performance when accelerating from a standstill. The DCT is controlled by an electronic gear selector on the center console and comes with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.
M Sport upgrades to match the new engine's performance.

The BMW Z4 sDrive35is includes new M Sport upgrades such as M Aerodynamics and adaptive M Suspension. The adaptive M Suspension combines a ride-height reduction of 10 millimeters (almost 0.4") with electronically controlled shock absorbers (Dynamic Damping Control) to improve the vehicle's agility without compromising ride comfort. The M Sport upgrades emphasize the Z4's athletic character through aerodynamically optimized exterior features and customized interior components.

Special 18-inch light-alloy wheels in five-spoke design round off the sporty character of the Z4 sDrive35is. 19-inch light-alloy wheels are available as an option. In addition to its unique wheels, the new model is further distinguished by a striking front bumper with a matte aluminum trim bar in each outer air intake, a rear bumper with accentuated surrounds on the tailpipes, and a rear diffuser finished at top in body color and black textured surface underneath.

M Sport interior enhancements and new Kansas Walnut leather.

Inside the BMW Z4 sDrive35is, the driving experience is enhanced by features such as a new thick-rimmed M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles, an M driver's footrest, and sport seats. Grey-faced instrument dials feature the "sDrive35is" model designation. Further features inside the Z4 sDrive35is are the Anthracite-colored BMW Individual roof lining, M door sill strips, floor mats with colored piping and the "sDrive35is" model designation, as well as M interior trim in Aluminum Carbon. The new Aluminum Carbon trim features the recognizable "weave" of natural carbon fiber interpreted on a matte aluminum base.

The range of leather upholstery is being further enhanced by an additional color variant marking the launch of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is: All versions of the Z4 Roadster are now also available in Kansas Walnut leather as an option. The BMW Z4 sDrive35is is available with a choice of six paintwork colors. In addition to Alpine White and the metallic colors Titanium Silver, Black Sapphire, Space Grey, and Deep Sea Blue, the Z4 Roadster is now available for the first time in Melbourne Red metallic. Regardless of the color chosen, the exterior mirror caps on the BMW Z4 sDrive35is are always Oxide Silver.

The 2010 Dodge Charger

Whether you are looking for a family Sedan that pleases each member of the family or the Muscle Car of your fantasies, the Dodge Charger is all of this and more. Since its conception in 1965 the Charger has continued to evolve into the car you need and desire today and into the future.

If you liked the Dodge Chargers of the past, you will love the newest renditions. The new Charger replaces the Dodge Intrepid in the full size sedan line and its interior is reminiscent of the now discontinued Magnum. What more can you ask of a car than to combine the features you liked in other lines with those you loved in the Charger of the past?

For 2010, you can choose from the base Charger SE, the SXT AWD, or the Charger RT AWD line or go for the gold with the Charger SRT8 RWD.

The 2010 Dodge Charger Model Specifications and overview include:
Charger SE-With its 2.7-Liter V6 DOHC 24-Valve MPI Engine and 4-Speed Automatic Transmission has plenty of power to get you where you are going while still having an EPA mpg rating of 18 city/26 hwy. 4-wheel disc brakes, multi-stage front air bags and keyless entry system are just a few of the features on this entry level Dodge Charger.

Charger SXT AWD-Has a 3.5-Liter V6 High-Output 24-Valve MPI Engine with a fun to use 5-Speed Automatic Transmission. All speed traction control is a great feature of the SXT AWD. There is quite a bit more power under the hood on the SXT while still rating a satisfying 17 city/23 hwy for mpg. Anti-Lock 4-Wheel Disc Performance Brakes along with power-heated mirrors and the ever-popular power adjustable pedals combine to give you more of the features you have grown to love in a Charger.

Charger RT AWD-Combines the engine and transmission features of the SXT with Leather-Trimmed, Heated, and Power Front Seats making the interior seem custom designed. EPA mpg rating stays right up there with 16 city/23 hwy mpg. The Charger RT combines features found on the SXT, with steering wheel mounted audio controls, and a 276-watt amplifier. Performance Exhaust and speed control are just a few of the additions in the RT line.

Charger SRT8 RWD-With its 6.1-Liter V8 SRT HEMI® Engine races ahead of the competition and delivers the performance you want. This engine performs at a whopping 425 hp @ 6000 rpm and still rates a decent 13 city/19 hwy EPA mpg rating. The interior finish on the SRT8 upgrades to luxurious Leather-Trimmed Suede Accent seating. Aluminum SRT design wheels and All Season high performance tires complete the sporty look owners are after.
