2009 Honda Civic (USA)

The new 2009 Honda Civic comes with a slightly changed exterior and new features. The 2009 Civic comes in 4-door sedan or 2-door coupe with a selection of gas/electric Hybrid sedan as well as Compressed natural gas (CNG). These sedans and coupes are available in DX, LX, EX, EX-L as well as Si version. The DX-VP an LX-S sedan are new for 2009. In addition to the above fleet, there is also the GX model running on CNG which comes in 113-hp 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine.

Comes with 140-hp, 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine for the DX-DX-VP, LX, LX-S, EX and EX-L while the Si version comes with 197-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. The hybrid models however, combines a gas engine and electric motor to produce 110hp which can run on one or both of its power source.

The 140-hp Civic are great for city ride as well as cruising on highway. The automatic transmission and the slick-shifting Si model is very alert to acceleration, thus making the car very responsive.

The hybrid models on the other hand, needed more stepping on the accelerator to build up speed. Non the less, they are able to keep pace with fast moving traffic. The engine for hybrid model automatically shuts off the gas engine at stop and restarts when the brake pedal is released. As for CVTs, the engine rev ahead of vehicle speed.

The acceleration for GX models is some what a little more dissapointing in terms of acceleration since it weigh 150 lb more and 27 hp less. However, this models still cruise perfectly around town. On highway however, the loss of power is more noticable where the GX models needs to labor more to gain speed.

As for fuel economy, the automatic transmission sedans averaged at 26.1 to 28.5 mpg while the coupes at 29.9 to 30.0 mpg. The Si sedan averaged at 29.4 mpg while the hybrids at 37.8 to 38.0 mpg in city / highway driving and 46.5 mpg with mostly highway drive. The Si models requires premium-grade gas while the remaining models may use regular.

To gauge the fuel economy of the GX models with the gasoline cars, we may calculate cost per mile. An automatic transmission non GX model cost about 14 cents per mile at $4.00 / gallon. The GX models on the other hand cost only 5.6 cents per mile.

The sedan comes with great absorbency and little float. On highway speeds, the LX and EX versions are especially stable while the coupes might be choppier on uneven surface. As for handling, the DX models proved to the more competent. The LX and EX version however, needed more grip in fast turns but it is quite responsive in most changes of direction. The Si models holds firmly in corners. Straight line stability are fine for all Civic models with effective stopping control.

The Civic sedan are top of its class in term of quietness in noise and suppression of road. The hybrid's CVT however produces more engine noise during acceleration compared to the sedans. The coupes however, do not block the noise as well as sedans while the Si engine and exhaust sound can be significantly heard.

The new Civic still inherits the two-tier instrument panel which places an analog tachometer ahead of the driver and a separately housed digital speedometer directly above it. This placement is great as the speedometer's digit is along the driver's line of sight and this keeps the focus of the driver on the road. Also within reach are the climate control while the audio switchgear requires a little stretch. There are a lot of audio function to play with, and the navigation system required a little extra effort to master it. The interior of the new Civic has a mix of high-grade plastics and fabrics. The Ex, Hybrid and Si have more up market feel.

All the 2009 Civic comes with a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. The GX models however, only comes in automatic only while the Si models only comes with a 6-speed manual. Hybrids have a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

The telescopic steering column and height-adjustable driver seat makes driving experience pleasurable. The feel on the Si's front seat are some what different as it has a glued-in-place feel to cater for fast cornering. There might not be enough headroom for tall occupant especally under the sunroof. Also, with a long dashboar shelf and sloping nose, it might complicated judging distance in close quarters for beginner drivers.

The rear room space is comfy with adequate adult headroom. Knee space, however is tight even with the front seats set far apart. Unless the front cushions are at their lowest point, there are ample foot space on the rear. Also, the flat floor is also inherited from their earlier model.

2009 CLS63 AMG

The new face lift model for the year 2009 sees a replacement of its original four-bar grill with the more dramatic two-bar grill, with upper and lower mesh finished in Atlas Grey. The coupe-like car emphasize on comfort and convenient with its four doors, coupled with sleek, sensuous exterior lines. Its large rear doors and spacious rear seats also represent tangible added value.

Also comes with a larger outside mirror featuring built-in arrow-shaped turn signal, and a new dual-five-spoke 19-inch wheels make the care even more striking. Completing the face lift model are the new rear bumper with trapezoidal dual exhaust pipes and arrow-shaped LED taillights.

The interior is equipped with a sportier three-spoke steering wheel and new gauges. Its three chronometer-type gauges and two LCD bar graphs in the instrument cluster are accented by chrome rings and more wood trim.

There are also four separate climate control zone which can be individually controlled, each on the front and rear seat. There is even a digital control panel for setting desired temperature and adjusting airflow for the rear passengers. Those new features are complimented by an abundance of leather and wood.

The Mercedes CLS come with two sleek model. The CLS 550 powered with DOHC four-valve-per-cylinder V8 engine capable of producing 382-horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque and the CLS 63 AMG comes with AMG-designed 6.2-liter V8 that produces 507 bhp and 465 lb-ft of torque.

The CLS 63 AMG engine which is developed by AMG, built from high-strength silicon-aluminum alloy, features four valves per cylinder, double overhead camshafts with variable valve timing, bucket tappets (rather than rocker arms), an 11.3 to 1 compression ratio and a variable intake manifold.
Comes with seven-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission, it can be shifted manually by either a conventional lever or paddles shift on the AMG sport steering wheel. Providing 35% faster gear shifts with its AMG Speedshift electronic control while giving performance-minded drivers total control of shifting, the manual mode of AMG Speedshift does not make any automatic up / down shifts even when driving at max engine speed / full load.

Equipped with giant vented and perforated disc brakes on its 14-inch disc and six-piston calipers up front and 13-inch discs with four-piston calipers at the rears, the river is ensured to be able to stop in no time. The 19-inch wheels with 8 1 and 9 1 inch widths carries 255 / 35 tires in front and 285 / 30 at rear.

History of Honda Civic

1st generation Honda Civic

From the original two-door and three-door Civic models, Honda introduced the Hondamatic (variable-speed automatic) and Civic CVCC in 1973. In 1974, the sporty Civic RS, equipped with twin-cab engine, and the Civic Van, a commercial-use vehicle was introduced. Among the achievement for this generation Civic are:

  • "Car of the Year Japan" for 3 consecutive years from 1972 to 1974.
  • Ranked third in Europe's "Car of the Year" awards in 1973 which is the highest ranking for a Japanese vehicle at that time.
  • Grabbed top prize among imported vehicles in the U.S. Road Test magazine’s “1974 Car of the Year.”

2nd generation Honda Civic

Product of the first full model change in seven years, this model is equipped with enhanced economy, interior comfort and driving performance. With the introduction of CVCC-II engine in 1980, Honda rolled out the Civic Country station wagon and the Civic 4-Door Sedan, featuring a Hondamatic transmission with overhead drive, front-wheel drive and notchback styling in 1981. “U.S. Import Car of the Year 1980” award from Motor Trend Magazine was awarded to Civic.

3rd generation Honda Civic
The concept for the third-generation Civic was “maximum space for people, minimum space for mechanisms.” Based on this concept, Honda developed three, four and five-door variations of the Civic — a three-door hatchback and four-door sedan, as well as a five-door shuttle offering superior utility space. In 1984, the Company unveiled the Civic Si, featuring a DOHC engine incorporating Formula 1 technologies. It was instantly popular thanks to its innovative, long-roofed design, and won the “Car of the Year Japan” award in 1984. In the United States, the Civic placed first in fuel efficiency tests conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1984 for the second consecutive year. In Europe, it won the Torino-Piedmonte Car Design Award 1984.”

4th generation Honda Civic
Emphasizing on performance based on human sensitivity while targeting higher efficiency, Honda creates Hyper 16-valve engine in five variation from 1300cc to 1500cc. The 4th generation Honda Civic combines four-wheel double wishbone suspension and the result was superb. In 1989, the Company unveiled the Civic SiR, equipped with its high-performance DOHC VTEC engine, featuring Honda’s revolutionary variable valve timing technology. This model was awarded the “Golden Steering Wheel Award” from Bild am Sonntag, a German newspaper. In a car quality and reliability survey conducted by France’s L’Automobile Magazine, this model was ranked first.

5th generation Honda Civic
Designed base on aerodynamic form with flexible interior space, the new Civic announce the arrival of new VTEC engine variation to provide high performance with fuel efficiency. Underneath this little wonder are 170-horsepower DOHC VTEC, ultrahigh fuel efficiency VTEC-E and high-balance VTEC. With major advancement in human and environmental friendliness, enhanced safety features and a high proportion of recyclable components, the fifth-generation Civic was awarded “Car of the Year Japan” in 1991 and 1992.

6th generation Honda Civic
The 6 generation Civic incorporates a range of new technologies that satisfy strong demand for high performance, safety and low emission. The 3-stage VTEC engine, boasting high output and high fuel efficiency and Honda Multimatic, a next-generation, variable-speed automatic transmission. This model was awarded "Car of the Year Japan" in 1995 and 1996.

7th generation Honda Civic
The 7 generation Civic was the "benchmark for compact cars" with all the important criteria in mind, coupled with maximum cabin space, smooth ride and unparalleled safety for occupants and pedestrians. Based on a low, flat-floor design, this enables occupants to easily move between front and rear seats. The 7th generation Civic won the "Car of the Year Japan" awards in 2001 and 2002 respectively for Honda's G-CON collision safety technology.

North America-bound Scirocco not as dead as we thought

While parts of Europe are enjoying the Scirocco revival, North America has been left in the dark by Volkswagen. Fearing the Scirocco would cannibalize sales of the GTI, not to mention a strong euro, they decided to leave the low-slung hatch out of this market. Or have they?

Speaking with Automotive News, Volkswagen of America spokesperson Steve Keyes said that enthusiasts have made their wishes clear that they want the Scirocco in the North American market. This coupled with the success of the Scirocco in Europe have Volkswagen higher-ups rethinking their position on the topic. Volkswagen seems more willing to make the Scirocco work here. Keyes revealed that a final decision has yet to be made on the Scirocco's availability here and added that if they do decide positively, it would have to be marketed "a little bit differently". Whatever it takes is what I say.

This could be the breakthrough we've all been looking for. We hope Volkswagen makes the right decision.
